It is a copy of the African mask produced by the peripheral groups Vuvi, Galoa and Mitsogho. The Vuvi produced relatively comparable masks, influenced by the proximity of the Mitsogho.

The Vuvi live in the centre of Gabon. The masks of the Vuvi bwiti association are characterised by the relative flatness of their design and the emblematic nature of their facial features and emblems. These masks serve as agents through which ancestral spirits reappear during funeral ceremonies and ceremonial communal gatherings. Each mask apparently had a special name related to the spirit it embodied. During nightly performances heralded by drum music, the leader of the ceremony intoned a specific song that reminded the audience of the individual features of the spirit represented by the masks.
